Gluten-Free Diet: Expectations vs. Reality

Over the past few years, people have been gushing over going on gluten-free diet. Even celebrities ranging from Oprah Winfrey to Gwyneth Paltrow to Miley Cyrus have something to say about how this diet is able to help them lose weight.

So there is no surprise that new gluten-free products have nearly tripled recently. According to statista.com, gluten-free food market may reach about 6.43 billion U.S. dollars worldwide by 2025. Retail sales in gluten-free products are forecasted to reach over 2 billion U.S. dollars by the end of 2020 in the United States alone.  Now, you can find gluten-free foods just about everywhere. Even gluten-free cookbooks are on the rise.

Lately, more and more restaurants flaunt their gluten-free menus and there is an increasing number of food packages labeled as gluten-free. There are even a lot of testimonials claiming how a gluten-free diet has been helpful to their health.

Gluten is a type of protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. Some people have intolerance or sensitivity with this protein so they avoid gluten. But some people with no gluten sensitivity choose to follow a gluten-free diet because it provides them a structure to eating healthier.

Here are some expectations vs reality that might give you an idea about gluten-free diet:

Expectation
Gluten-free foods are tasteless
Reality
Definitely not!

Some people think that gluten-free food tastes horrible. But there are a lot of gluten-free products that taste even better than gluten-containing foods! Lots of great-tasting gluten-free or “GF” are already available on the market, from cookies to pizzas and even loaf bread. Not to mention that there are also other delicious, healthy, and naturally gluten-free foods such as meat, fruits, and vegetables.

Expectation
Gluten-free diet is boring
Reality
Far from it!

In fact, it is even more challenging and surprising. For instance, if you are making your own gluten-free pastries, you can experiment by mixing and matching different types of gluten-free flour every time to adjust to the flavor you desire and you get to be surprised with its different flavors each time.

Expectation
I can no longer enjoy alcoholic drinks?
Reality
Not necessarily.

Though beer contains gluten, there are so many distilled liquors that you can drink without worrying about gluten such as whisky, tequila, gin, vodka, and the list goes on. Even if some are made from wheat, barley, or rye, the gluten is removed during the distillation process.

Expectation
I have to give up on bread, noodles and pasta
Reality
Of course not.

When one door closes, another one opens. You’ll be surprised to know that there a lot of gluten-free counterparts that you can enjoy such as buckwheat, oats and quinoa grains for your bread and brown rice pasta, chickpea pasta, rice noodles, lasagna noodles and many more.

Expectation
Gluten-free foods are a lot more expensive
Reality
It may be true before but today, absolutely not!

With all the hype and readily available gluten-free food in every corner, prices are definitely not an issue. Gluten-free foods are now less expensive compared to gluten-containing foods than they used to be. Gluten-free book recipes everywhere feature budget-friendly gluten-free foods and gluten-free meal plans.

Although gluten is not necessarily evil for all, there are many people without gluten sensitivity who choose a gluten-free diet to feel better and it just simply fits their healthy lifestyle, as long as it is a healthy and a well-balanced diet.
